To launch Whataburger’s new limited time offer, the Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick'n® Sandwich, we turned a familiar Southern phrase into a product story. "Comin' in Hot" contrasts today's culture of rushing through everything with the Texan instinct to slow down and savor what's worth your time. By treating the sandwich as a moment that demands your attention, we elevated its layered sweet heat, crispy texture, and bold flavor into an experience that's impossible to ignore, driving awareness, excitement, and trial while reinforcing Whataburger's distinctive Texan swagger.

THE BRIEF

Background

Whataburger was launching its new Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick'n® Sandwich in June 2026. The sandwich is made up of a crispy, juicy fried chicken filet, topped with hot honey chili crisp, and a smooth, creamy cheese spread all on a soft potato bun. We needed to develop awareness-driving creative that excites and compels trial.

Challenge

Hot honey chicken sandwiches aren’t new in the category with brands like CFA and McDonalds launching similar limited time offers. Our challenge was twofold: 

1. Position this LTO as distinctly ours by highlighting the bold flavor profile that is instantly craveable, distinctive and impossible to ignore.

2. Resist the creative temptation to let any single flavor steal the show. Hot honey chili crisp, pimento cheese and crispy chicken each carry strong individual identities. The work needed to unify all three into one cohesive, craveable narrative rather than a flavor ingredient list.

Target

Gen Z & Millennial QSR consumers who are drawn to new and exciting limited time menu items, seeking something new that breaks the day-to-day routine. They love chicken sandwiches because they’re the perfect intersection of craveable flavor and convenience.

Assignment

Develop a distinctive, evocative product narrative that brings the sandwich’s layered, bold sweet-heat flavors to life while expressing its unmistakable Southern and Texas-inspired character, edge and swagger.

Strategy

Each layer of the sandwich brings its own personality, but together they create a sweet-heat flavor rush that keeps coming at you from every angle. This isn't just another hot honey sandwich, it's a flavor experience that shows up bigger, bolder, and more unapologetically Whataburger.

To announce the new Hot HoneyCrisp Whatachick’n Sandwich to the world in true Southern fashion, we juxtaposing the idea of “Hurry Culture” to the Southern way of moseying into the moment. All while bringing to life the bold, delicious sweet heat of this exciting sandwich.
